Workshop Description: Jose and Reyna have been spearheading a majority of the immigrant youth voice in the Phoenix, AZ for several years now. Under Reyna and Jose, Aliento's grassroots and youth-involving advocacy has successfully passed pro-immigrant legislation and have financially, emotionally, & logistically helped the Phoenix community when needed the most. In this workshop, they will share best practices and educated Lion's on how to implement advocacy strategies.

Workshop Description: The California Transportation System obtained several properties in the 60's to build a freeway that would connect the 710 to Pasadena 210 freeway but had to rent out the homes on the corridor temporarily. For Four decades Caltrans has proven to be the worst Slumlord in all of California. In this session, we'll talk about environmental injustice, tenant rights/ actions and the right to community control in the times of Black Lives Matter.

In this session we’ll look at how to build collective power for change through strengthening & developing our relationships and relational networks. We’ll discuss what it might look like to make Ignatian organizing a part of your ‘faith doing justice’ toolkit. And we'll share how Jesuit affiliated institutions in Los Angeles are coming together to do collaborative organizing for racial equity.

This workshop will highlight the work of Initiate Justice, which has changed 5 laws in the last four years by engaging and training people directly impacted by incarceration. It will also offer an overview of the California state legislative process, and action items anyone can take to be involved in the process.

Learn from the Youth Leaders who pushed this movement forward, their challenges in creating a model for and by youth, and how this policy reflects the needs of resilient young Angelenos. Participants will learn about best practices for youth organizing in a citywide campaign, which can be adapted to their own organizing efforts in the local and city wide level. This interactive session will empower participants with tools in youth organizing, coalition building, social media advocacy tools and provide opportunities for participants to become involved in these efforts.

Mutual aid is not and never was a form of charity, it is a guiding principle for practicing reciprocal and collective care. Mutual aid is how we support each other however we’re able to and in the process, we make it more possible to agitate and dismantle, to move towards autonomy and collectivity, and ultimately build towards bigger shifts.
